The Alzheimer’s Society

Running Man

I directed and shot this film in July 2017.

The poem – “Marathon” by E. Ethelbert Miller, resonated with all of the production crew, and seemed to fit with the personal narrative of ultra marathon runner Sam Hopkins.

The shoot was physically demanding but intensely rewarding for all of us. The scenery in Wales was stunning. We climbed Pen Yr Fan in the central Beacons twice, once with a full kit. And we were up at all hours to catch the light, most memorably walking out over the land bridge at low tide to shoot on Worms Head near Rhossilli, then back before the tide came in.

The film won a Gold for cinematography at the 2018 Telly Awards.

In 2019 Ethelbert Miller emailed me:

Hi Matthew,

The video is beautiful!  Excellent work.

Congrats on the award.

It’s been over a year since my sister (72) died from dementia.

So, your work finds a special place in my heart.

I wish you the best in 2019.
